Highlights of the Momo and Music Program: Unity and Tradition

Located in the American Italian Club in Scotch Plains, the annual Momo and Music Program– hosted by Friends of Nepal, NJ (FONNJ)– was radiating with unity, merriment, and honor. The vibrant music and food brought an unforgettable memory to many, including me, in which I am incredibly grateful to experience. This program was an incredible amalgamation; it allowed a variety of people to reconnect, celebrate, create new memories together, and – most importantly – enjoy the culture. Attendees traveled from all over the nation: New York, Baltimore, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, etc., really showcasing the diversity of the crowd. The whole program truly conveyed how we Nepali people are indefinitely connected through our heritage. I’m sure many others would agree when I say it was a beautiful program that highlighted Nepali culture and traditions!

SHARED EXCITEMENT AND ANTICIPATION

When entering the building, the environment was incredibly welcoming. The ambiance was comforting and the place felt alive; people were talking, laughing, and enjoying the company. Several attendees expressed how excited they were and how much they look forward to the event every year. Many described as a home away from home – somewhere where nostalgia, spirit, and culture can effortlessly bind together. Particularly for me, I first came to this event in 2018 when I was seven years old. This year in 2026, I could profoundly see the growth and changes within the program, plus the ever-lasting community expanding with spirit.   Photo by KESU Production

MUSIC THAT FILLED THE HEARTS

The musical performances were the heartbeat of the evening. Local bands opened the program with monumental energy; their passion and talent did not go unnoticed, as they kept the crowd engaged and set the perfect tone for the rest of the night. But the highlight of the evening for many people was when artist Raju Lama from the Mongolian Heart Band from Nepal came to showcase his music and performed on stage. As an onlooker, the energy of the room shifted automatically. Although I wasn’t as familiar of him (unlike my parents, who continuously talk about his impact in music when they were younger and how much they appreciate it), seeing him perform felt incredibly heart-warming. He connected with the audience so naturally – it was evident his music still had significant impact to many. He had such a humble and personable nature and aura; it was really refreshing to see.   Photo by KESU Production

A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH TRADITION

Well, no Nepali event is complete without food, and this year’s lineup of vendors delivered a delectable lineup pleasant to the palate and hits all the traditional aspects as well! The aroma of spices filled the air as people lined up to taste their favorite dishes. Even I was practically salivating at the rich flavors and dishes presented, what stood out to me the most was the Newari food. The Yomari reminded me of home since my mom makes it every year for my dad’s birthday (around Yomari Punhi). The samay baji platters’ presentation was amazing, and it evidently showed the traditional food of Nepal. Even dishes that I didn’t try, like the pani puri, looked appetizing as well. I’m sure it tasted splendid, as the stalls were crowded with eagerness. Most importantly, the momo tasted phenomenal. It’s a huge comfort food to me, and for many others as well. To have that delicious dish while enjoying the program seemed to be the key to having a great time. It was definitely a hit, and I still think about the taste to this day!

LOOKING AHEAD

Overall, the Momo and Music Program was more than just a fun night out. It showed the strength of the Nepali community and brought people together once more. Events like this are truly necessary in life, as it keeps traditions alive while also giving younger generations a chance to experience and connect with their culture. As the evening came to a close, the pride, connection, and happiness lingered. The 2026 Momo and Music Program was a memorable experience, and it is definitely something I (and many others) will be looking forward to next year!
